During perimenopause, declining hormone levels can cause the vaginal tissues to become thin, lose elasticity, and produce less moisture. Change Your Washing Products
Scented shower gels, soaps, or vaginal douching are not necessary to have a clean and healthy vagina, and these products can actually irritate the vaginal tissues and lead to infections. Prevent this by using a gentle non-abrasive washcloth and lukewarm water when you wash your private area.
Wear Comfortable Underwear
Tight underwear and underwear made of synthetic materials, such as lace and polyester, are likely to rub against the vagina and exacerbate pain. These types of underwear also restrict air access to the vagina, which is only likely to intensify the dryness. Opt for underwear made from breathable and natural fabrics, such as cotton.
Use Natural Moisturizers and Lubricants
Olive, coconut, and avocado oils are nurturing and hydrating natural moisturizers with high vitamin E contents. Apply these topically to the vagina for instant relief. Water-based lubricants that can be purchased over the counter at a local pharmacy can also help.
Eat More Foods with Phytoestrogens
For menopausal women, vaginal dryness is often caused by hormonal imbalances, primarily a decline in estrogen levels. Counter this naturally by eating more phytoestrogens, or plant compounds that act like estrogen in the human body. Phytoestrogens are found in soy products, tempeh, oats, barley, nuts, and seeds, among others.
