What Is Causing My Mom's Mood Swings?

Your mother's bad mood swings are most likely caused by menopause, a transition out of her fertile years.

Before a woman reaches menopause, she experiences many symptoms and changes as her body produces fewer sex hormones - especially estrogen - and gets ready to end its reproductive capability.

Estrogen is one of these principal hormones, and it's in charge of regulating not only the menstrual cycle, but also the health of various other organs, including the brain. As such, lower levels of estrogen can affect mood and cause mood swings.

Also, a woman may experience various other symptoms characteristic of the hormonal imbalance, such as hot flashes, night sweats, digestive problems, allergies, fatigue, weight gain, and many more.

However, changing hormone levels are not the only thing that can cause mood swings during menopause. Many other factors, such as stress at home or at work, can cause a woman to experience mood swings. They can also be the result of an underlying mental health condition.

In other words, your mother's mood swings do have a physiological origin. They are most likely not a true reflection of her feelings towards you.

What Can Be Done about My Mom's Mood Swings?

While you may not be able to provide medical help to your mother, the best thing you can do is to try to be understanding and work to see things from her perspective.

Appreciate what your mom does for you and the sacrifices she has made for you, and let her know that you appreciate it. Also, try to spend quality time with her and help out as often as possible.
