3 Things to Do to Relieve Joint Pain

What is Joint Pain?

Joint pain can be categorized in two ways: arthritic and non-arthritic.

  • Arthritic Joint Pain - A joint disorder that manifests itself in over 100 different diseases, arthritis does not just come and go. Despite common belief that only the elderly suffer from arthritis, research shows that two-thirds of sufferers are under the age of 65. Many women develop arthritis joint pain during menopause.

  • Non-Arthritic Joint Pain - While curable, non-arthritic joint pain is the presence of inflammation in between the joints that causes discomfort. It can result from an injury, sprain or strain, infection, bursitis, or tendinitis.

Relieving Joint Pain

1

Rest and Exercise

Exercising with joint pain may seem absolutely undesirable. However, it is definitely the most important. Low-impact physical exercise, like swimming or yoga, helps keep muscles strong and ease the ache. Studies have shown that yoga can decrease tender and swollen joints. The goal is to maintain and build muscle mass without putting stress on your joints.

Also make sure to give your body plenty of rest. Applying a heating pad to your joints before exercising will help loosen the stiffness and warm the body. Relaxing baths and stretching frequently can also help to alleviate joint pain.

2

Meditation

Stress can aggravate preexisting joint pain. Therefore, a regular meditation practice will not only calm the body and help to regulate emotions, but it can relieve inflammation and joint pain as well. Experts have found that meditation proves to calm the mind, which in turn produces good thoughts and can help to make arthritic-episodes easier to handle.

3

Pain Relievers

Although medication is said to only mask the problem, pain relievers can help alleviate joint pain immensely. Fish oil supplements are known to relieve tender joints and stiff muscles. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, reduce inflammation and pain.

Joint pain can be a burden to live with, but you don't have to suffer in silence. Keep your body moving on a daily basis, whether you take a long walk or attend a yoga class. Incorporate healing meditation and mild exercise while making sure to give your body plenty of rest and relaxation as well. Talk to your doctor if your joint pain persists for longer than three days, you have a fever, or the pain is accompanied by warm and red skin. Also, read more about menopausal joint pain treatments.
