Gum pain can be a frustrating and bothersome condition. Fortunately, you don't have to suffer in silence; there are ways of relieving the pain and preventing its progression. Clove oil is an ancient remedy used for soothing gum pain. It has both numbing and antiseptic properties, which work to decrease any infection. You can apply clove oil onto painful gums for immediate relief by using either a cotton swab or a toothpick.
To use sea salt for the purpose of relieving painful gums and reducing infection, mix a teaspoon of salt into a cup of water and rinse your mouth with the solution. Swish it over painful gums as many times as is necessary to relieve the pain. Doing this will help cleanse the area and kill bacteria.
Ice pops will soothe gum pain by numbing painful areas. Instead of biting down on them though, allow the ice to melt in your mouth and surround the gum pain. Consumed in this way, ice pops will provide temporary relief from the pain, and reduce swelling and inflammation. However, make sure to limit your intake as the high sugar content in ice lolly's can worsen gum pain and provoke additional symptoms.
When you have gum pain, try to avoid eating hard, rough foods that can worsen it. Instead, stick to foods such as soup, which are easy to swallow and help repair injured and inflamed areas. Steamed vegetables and juices can also be beneficial.
The essential oils found in chamomile tea can do a great deal to relieve and soothe gum pain. Brew one cup of strong chamomile tea and wait for it to become tepid. Wash it through your mouth for two minutes before spiting it out. Do this as many times a day as is required, especially following meals. Avoid drinking for 20 minutes after performing this procedure in order to avoid washing away essential oils.
