Have your cognitive functions been acting like a downward facing dog recently, and difficulty concentrating has begun to affect your crown chakra? If this sounds familiar, some researches in India believe they are onto something that can help with difficulty concentrating.
After studying the effectiveness of Yoga on difficulty concentrating and other menopausal symptoms, the researchers determined that simple yoga exercises can not only help with physical symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats, but also with cognitive symptoms, especially difficulty concentrating.
The researchers, headed by Dr. R. Chattha, of the Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana in Bangalore, India, randomly assigned 120 women between the ages of 40 and 55 who had difficulty concentrating and hot flashes, to either yoga practices or simple stretches and strengthening exercises five days a week for two months.
The yoga practice had a single aim, the researchers said, which was to gain mastery over the changes that take place such as difficulty concentrating and other mental menopause symptoms, which was accomplish by "slowing down the flow of thoughts in the mind."
To supplement the physical aspects of the study, the yoga group also heard talks about tips for using the Eastern practice to deal with stress, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. The group that limited its practices to stretching and strength exercises listened to advice on healthy foods to eat, exercise, the physical effects of menopause and the stress that can go along with it.
At the end of the two-month study, the women who practiced yoga and learned of it's general philosophies related both to physical and mental functions had reduced hot flash symptoms, while the other group did not. Both groups showed improved mental functions, but the yoga group suffered even less from difficulty concentrating than the other group.
